2010 MSEA Read Across America Literacy Program

Are you a reading specialist or language arts teacher with a great idea for increasing literacy? MSEA is expanding its Read Across America program with funding for Local Associations and their members to establish literacy programs for high-risk students. The awards, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, will be distributed based on available funds, scope of project and how well the proposal meets the criteria.

Proposals for funding must be submitted to Debra Garner, state coordinator, via mail or email with a supporting letter from your Local president by January 31, 2010.

Purpose: To provide support for a reading literacy program or service sponsored by a local affiliate of the Maryland State Education Association targeted to minority and/or high risk preK-12 students.

Description: Read Across America was established by the National Education Association in 1997 to encourage improved literacy among public high school students.  As the standards of student achievement have steadily increased, reading skills have become even more essential for success.  This year, MSEA has expanded its Read Across America program to include funding awarded to Local Associations and their members to establish a program or service activity with measurable results targeted to improve literacy among minority and/or high-risk students.  The amounts provided will range between $1,000 and $5,000 and will be distributed based on available funds, scope of project, and how well the proposal meets the criteria below.

Criteria: Proposals must be submitted to Debra Garner, state coordinator of Read Across America via mail or email through a Local Association with a supporting letter from the Local president by January 31, 2010.

Awards will be based on the following criteria:

Notification: Notification of awards will be no later than February 15, 2010.  MSEA will assist Local Associations in beginning stages of implementation upon request.
