Get A Plumber Larkspur Service For That New Sink

Your old bathroom vanity is beginning to look worn. It’s got scratches and other marks on it. Definitely time for a new one. The good news is that installing a new sink and vanity is not really that hard according to plumber Larkspur professionals. Here are the steps to follow:

Removing the old vanity and sink.

The first thing you need to do is turn off the water. Then loosen the plastic slip nut at the top of the P-trap underneath the sink. The next step is to disconnect the water lines.

Using a utility knife, you want to cut the sealant that runs along the top of the backsplash. Then pull on the sink to disconnect it from the wall.

Take the sink off of the vanity. Some sinks are attached with screws, others are glued on. If yours is glued on, you can get it off with a hammer and chisel.

To take out the vanity, you first have to remove the screws at the back that attach it to the wall.

Putting in the new vanity.

The first thing to do is mark the outline of the new vanity with a pencil along the wall. To make things easier, get a new vanity with the same dimensions as the old one. Mark wall studs using a stud finder. In most vanities, the back is open. If it is not, you are going to have to cut holes in the back for the pipes. Measure how far it is from the wall to the pipes.

Put in the new vanity, lining it up with your marks on the wall. To make the installation easier, you can take out the drawers and the doors first. Check to make sure that it is level.

Drill a pilot hole through the back of the vanity into the wall. Do this into a stud to make sure it is a firm attachment. If you cannot line it up with a stud, use a wall anchor. Then attach the vanity with a screw.

Putting in the sink.

Put the faucet and drain together and attach them to the sink before you put the sink on the vanity.

Lay down a thin line of silicone adhesive around the top edge of the vanity.

Working with a helper, put the sink on top of the vanity, making sure that the pipes are aligned. Allow the adhesive to dry.

Reconnect the drain. If the drain pipe on the new sink is too long, you can cut it with a hacksaw. If it is too short, you can find extensions at the hardware store.

Reattach the water lines.

Here are a few things that you should take the time to learn about your Marin County plumbing system that may come in handy if problems ever develop.

Know where things are.

Know where the main water pipe to your house is and how to shut it off. The shutoff valve may be at the water meter or at some other location. Wherever it is, you need to find it and know how to turn it off. Learn where the shut off valves are to all of your plumbing fixtures. Each sink and toilet has one (usually right under the sink or behind the toilet). Then, once you have located them, make sure you know how to use them. Be aware, however, that you don’t want to use them unless you really have to. These valves are not designed for heavy use, and using them repeatedly may cause them to malfunction.

Learn how to turn things off.

Learn how to turn the water supply off. You should learn where to turn off the gas at the source and at each appliance. Learn how to turn off the water to the water heater. This will come in handy if you have a leak in your water heater or some other problem. This way, you can turn off the water supply to the water heater without disrupting the supply to the rest of the house. Also, put a pan or some other container under your water heater. This is a precautionary measure in case your heater springs a leak. If you have a pan underneath, you can prevent a lot of water damage.

Learn about your water bill and water pressure.

Learn how to decipher your water bill and read your water meter. This way, you can make sure you are being billed properly, and you can determine if you have a leak or not. If you are having trouble, your water company can help you out. Find out what the water pressure is in your house. It should be less  than 80 pounds per square inch. Anything over that is too high. High pressure can lead to leaks and damage pipes. You can buy a water pressure gauge for under $10, or you can find out the water pressure from the water company.

Find out what kind of waste system you have.

Is it sewer or septic tank? Also know where the clean-out plugs are for the system. This will be helpful if you get a clog because clogs usually occur at the clean-out plugs.
